A very attractive Victorian silver-gilt (gold-washed) tea
service,
comprising a
teapot, a cream/milk jug, a swing-handle sugar bowl, a pair
of sugar
tongs and two
teaspoons. Each piece is decorated with brightcut
engraving of
swags and bows. The teapot has a flush hinge and wood
handle and
finial. Everything fits into an original carrying
case.
This set is a marvellous example of the
neo-
classical
revival of the late nineteenth century, based on the Adam
style originally developed a hundred years
earlier.
Made
in 1875 by Robert Harper of London. Overall length of
teapot: 10
1/2 ins (26.5 cm). Overall weight of service: 28 oz
(870 g)
