A very attractive pair of late Victorian silver
candlesticks, with square
bases and gadroon-mounted borders, decorated with swags
and
medallions. They have detachable nozzles (sconces), and
are
in very
good condition.
Made in 1900 by Hawksworth Eyre.
Height: 7 1/2 inches (19 cm) Base: 3 3/4 inches
square (9.5 cm)
These are beautiful
reproductions of a design from the 1790s, based on the
style of the neoclassical English architect Robert Adam.
He reintroduced Graeco-Roman features to contemporary
silverware, including swags, medallions and columns.
These are slightly smaller versions of
another pair of silver candlesticks we have by the same
maker -- therefore, the suite of four would look very good
together [see 20C131 for the other pair - see 20C132 for
the suite of four].
