A good, heavy William IV silver basting (long serving)
spoon in Hourglass pattern.
This is an
attractive design,
similar
to Kings, but with a distinctive hourglass device below
the shell. It originated in eighteenth century French
flatware.
A small contemporary crest is
engraved on the
handle of the ladle.
Made in 1836 by Mary Chawner
of 16 Hosier
Lane, Smithfield, London. Length: 12 1/4 inches (31
cm) Weight: 7 oz (220 g)
Chawner & Co
were one of the most important silver flatware makers in
nineteenth century London. The founder, William Chawner,
died in 1834, and the business was continued and expanded
by his widow Mary. Around 1840 she took her son-in-law
George Adams as a partner, and the firm grew into a
Victorian legend.
