Chawner & Co were one of the most important silver flatware makers in nineteenth century London. The founder, William Chawner, died in 1834, and the business was continued and expanded by his widow Mary. Around 1840 she took her son-in-law George Adams as a partner, and the firm grew into a Victorian legend.
