A good example of a silver jug unique to the Channel Island
of Guernsey.
The 'Guernsey Can' is based on the
distinctive shape of the old French milk can used on the
island two hundred years ago. Towards the end of the
nineteenth century, tourism to Guernsey had greatly
increased, and the local retailers were looking for good
souvenirs to sell to the visitors.
They started
commissioning Birmingham silversmiths to make them as water
jugs which were then sold on the island as 'Guernsey
Cans'.
It is round, with a small lip, a loop
handle and pull-off lid, with a strainer underneath.
Made in 1939 by W. J. Holmes of Birmingham.
Overall height to top of handle on lid: 5 3/4 inches
(15 cm) Weight: 7 oz (215 g)
