A beautiful pair of George III silver butter shells.
Each consists of a good size scallop shell, with a
flat-chased gadroon decorated handle.
Each rests
of three intricately-made whelk feet (you can see these on
the right-hand dish, which is pictured upside down).
The butter shells are heavier than the typical
examples often seen, and each is engraved with two crests.
Made in 1814 by Rebecca Emes and John Barnard of
London. Length: 5 inches (12.5 cm)
