George III Oblong Silver Cake Basket

George III Oblong Silver Cake Basket

Price: £2350$3705€2810

Stock number: AS067

A lovely George III oblong silver cake or bread basket.

It has a gadroon border, with shell and scroll decoration on the corners.

It has a plain swing handle with leaf decoration, and stands on a collet base.

Unusually, it is engraved with a contemporary inscription in French under the base:
'La reconnaifsance de G. Hundleby a l'amitie de M. Alliston. Mars 1815.'

George Hundleby and John Alliston were partners in a London law firm at Freeman's Court in Cornhill. I am grateful to Evelyn Dick of Langley, B.C., Canada for this information.

This George III oblong silver cake basket was made in 1814 by William Bennett of London.
Length: 12 1/4 inches (31 cm)
Width: 9 1/4 inches (23.5 cm)
Height to top of handle: 9 inches (23 cm)
Weight: 29 oz (900 g)

Although it was originally intended as a bread or cake basket, it can also be used for fruit or flowers on a sideboard or in the centre of the table.
