A fantastic silver 'Epergne' centerpiece with four hanging baskets.
The central body is oval and pierced with scroll and geometric decoration. It has a band of gadrooning, with shells and scrolls around the lower part. There is an applied cast frieze of leaves, flowers and scrolls underneath.
The large central detachable bowl sits in the centre, with similar piercing; and a gadroon, shell and scroll border. The two handles are in the form of scrolls.
There are four detachable arms decorated with scrolls and leaves. Each supports a round pierced basket with a pierced handle.
It all stands on four large leaf and scroll feet.
This is a fabulous reproduction of a Georgian epergne from the 1760s. It is made to an exceptional quality. Epergnes were widespread in top French society before being introduced to England around 1715. Although they varied over the years, they always consisted of an elaborate central stand with a number of branching arms holding baskets or dishes. The name 'epergne' derives from the French verb 'epargner', which means 'to save' -- ie to save space on the table.
This beautiful silver ‘Epergne’ centrepiece was made in 1919 (two baskets in 1921) by Mappin and Webb of London.
Length (between outside of hanging baskets): 19 inches (48 cm)
Width (between outside of hanging baskets): 18 inches (46 cm)
Height to top of central basket: 16 1/4 inches (41.2 cm)
Weight: 155 oz (4820 g) - very heavy
