A very attractive pair of William IV silver wine coasters.

The bodies are round and assymetrically hand-pierced. The tops are in the form of scrolls, shells and flowers, and they have plain thread bases. They have turned wood bases, each with a central silver piece with a scroll border. They are each engraved with a contemporary crest.

This is an excellent pair of coasters (or decanter stands) made in a very good gauge of silver. Despite all the piercing, the bodies are very strong. The silver hallmarks are clearly stamped on the side of each base, and there is a lion mark on each central piece. They have been made by a very highly- regarded firm of silversmiths.

This beautiful pair of William IV silver wine coasters was made in 1832 by Joseph and John Angell of 55 Compton Street, Clerkenwell, London -- an uncle and nephew partnership.
