*Omar Ramsden* - Silver and Wood Mazer Bowl

A beautiful small silver and wood 'Mazer Bowl'.

A 'Mazer Bowl' is a small round wooden drinking vessel, with various types of silver decoration around the outside. Its name was derived from the early German 'masa', meaning a spot, in reference to the spotted grain of the wood. It was designed for drinking, cupped in one hand, often to toast the health of a child.

The piece consists of: on the outside, a turned wooden bowl with a silver pedestal base. And on the inside, a hand-hammered silver liner with a rim over the edge of the wood.

Inside the silver base is engraved: 'OMAR RAMSDEN ME FECIT' - 'Omar Ramsden made me', the maker's celebrated trademark message.

It is a lovely piece by one of the mid-twentieth century's most interesting and highly sought silversmiths.

This fine silver and wood ‘Mazer Bowl’ was made in 1930 by Omar Ramsden of London.
