Pair of Edwardian Silver Placecard Holders with Wedgwood Discs

A very attractive pair of Edwardian silver placecard holders, each mounted with an original Wedgwood China disc depicting a classical Graeco-Roman scene. They stand on plain round plinths

Placecard holders became popular towards the end of the Victorian era, and continued well into the the 1920s and 1930s. They often came in pairs, or sets of 4 or 6. Each one was placed in front of a diner, and his or her name was written on a piece of card that fitted into the back. Larger holders were designed for menus and they were usually made singly.

This pair of silver placecard holders with Wedgwood discs was made in 1905 by Cohen & Charles of Chester.
