Victorian Large Oblong Silver Inkstand
A lovely Victorian large oblong silver inkstand.
It has a gadroon border, and stands on four cast shell and scroll feet. The base has two long recesses to take quill pens.
It has two cut-glass inkpots with silver mounts and hinged lids. In the centre is a plain oblong box with hinged lid: this is a wafer box. Wafer was a small disc of flour mixed with gum or gelatine and used for sealing letters.
This is an excellent inkstand. It is a reproduction of an earlier Georgian design. Both the silver and cut glass are in excellent condition. All the separate pieces are correctly hallmarked.
This superb Victorian large oblong silver inkstand was made in 1881 by Aldwinckle and Slater of London.
