Victorian Silver Claret Jug 1873

A beautiful Victorian silver claret jug.

It is tall, and the main part of the body is urn-shaped. It is delicately engraved with scrolls, leaves, flowers and fruit. It stands on a round pedestal base with chased leaf decoration.

It has a plain hinged lid, engraved with leaves, and a detachable leaf and fruit finial.

The loop handle has applied and engraved leaf decoration, with two beautiful leaf mounts. Interestingly, it is attached to the body through ivory insulators.

This is a delightful all-silver antique claret jug, which would make a fantastic gift for any occasion. The fact that the handle has ivory insulators means that it must also have been intended for hot wine as well as cold. It is a typical piece of high Victoriana.

This delightful Victorian silver claret jug was made in 1873 by Martin, Hall & Co of London.
